Budgeting for Americans 101

June 10th, 2008 by

Budgeting is a science and requires patience and dedication moreso than anything else.

First, start with a list. Make a list of everything you’ve spent money on in the past month. Be inclusive, and don’t ignore small things or whatever seems insignificant.

Now, circle the things that you NEED to spend money on every month, along with when it’s due and how much money you’ll be spending.

Look carefully at all these things. Are you already budgeting with them? What can you cut out? Maybe it’s coffee in the morning, maybe it’s a bottle of wine or a pack of cigarettes every few days. Check off everything that isn’t a necessity.

What does it add up to? Do any of those items look like vices? This is money that could be part of your debt relief agenda. Making small sacrifices not only helps you financially, but it helps you control your life better overall with discipline.

Don’t ignore this oft-overlooked tip; it can mean the difference between your debt relief and continuing the financial problems you’ve been having up to this point.
